West Virginia guard Tynice Martin to redshirt with foot injury
On Wednesday, Auburn saw its nation’s-longest win streak snapped at 14 games in a 76-71 loss at Alabama. Auburn hadn’t lost in two months.
But Auburn had 14 steals and six blocks in a 79-65 win over Georgia on Saturday.
The three-time defending conference champions now stand alone atop the Big Ten despite having a roster thinned by injuries and preseason transfers. Terps coach Brenda Frese used only seven players until the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.
Kelsey Mitchell scored 15 for Ohio State (16-4, 5-2), which never led in its second straight Big Ten defeat.
Since joining the conference in 2014, Maryland has a 64-4 record in league play (including the tournament). Three of those defeats were against Ohio State; the other came against Michigan State on Jan. 11, one day after starting guard Blair Watson tore her right ACL in practice and was lost for the season.
South Carolina has been up and down this season — the Gamecocks are 12-7 overall and 3-4 in the SEC — but coach Frank Martin is hoping his team is starting to find its way.
As big as Sunday’s win was for Florida State, the Seminoles’ ability to rally on the road Thursday also was critical. Thomas had 28 points at Wake Forest, including all six of the Seminoles’ points in overtime. She and teammate Imani Wright (who hit nine 3-pointers and scored 31 points) led a 17-2 surge in the fourth quarter that tied the score. Thomas also had 11 rebounds against the Demon Deacons.
All in all, it was a gutsy week for the Seminoles, who got contributions across the board in both games. Thomas led the way in two victories — by a combined total of three points — that could loom large for Florida State’s hopes of winning the ACC title.
